Wildlife Safaris

Leopards, elephant gatherings and blue whales — Sri Lanka squeezes more accessible wildlife per square mile than almost anywhere in Asia. Dawn game drives in Yala, hundreds of elephants at Minneriya and the largest animal that has ever lived just offshore.

For its size, Sri Lanka may be the best wildlife-watching destination on the planet. Nowhere else can you track the highest leopard density on earth in the morning and watch blue whales surface before lunch — with wild elephants at the roadside in between.

The big three

Leopards. Yala National Park is the island's flagship reserve, where dawn and dusk drives with a naturalist guide give a genuine chance of Sri Lanka's apex cat lounging on a rock outcrop.

Elephants. Udawalawe delivers near-guaranteed sightings of herds on open grassland, while each dry season (roughly August–September) hundreds of elephants converge on the receding tank at Minneriya — "The Gathering", one of the great wildlife spectacles of Asia.

Whales. Off Mirissa between November and April, boats leave at first light to meet blue whales, sperm whales and acrobatic spinner dolphins.

Beyond the headline acts

Sloth bears, painted storks, crocodiles, troops of toque macaques, and over 500 bird species — a third of them visible on a single unhurried morning around a dry-zone tank. The island is a biodiversity hotspot with 26 national parks, and pairing two or three of them keeps every drive fresh.

Our safaris use private 4x4 jeeps with experienced trackers, time every drive for animal activity rather than convenience, and never chase or crowd a sighting. Combine the parks with the Cultural Triangle or the coast — most itineraries can fold in both.

New journeys in this collection are coming soon — send an inquiry and we'll tailor one for you.
